Is Jesus, Lucifer?
NO!
Translations, as well as our lack of
discernment, mess things up. Let’s stick to the Greek and Hebrew when we try to
understand the English…
Lucifer is a latin
word, deriving from the Greek word eosphoros/εωσφόρος. This word was chosen to be used in the Greek
Septuagint. We read:
Isa 14:12 How has Lucifer, that
rose in the morning, fallen from heaven! He that sent orders
to all the nations is crushed
to the earth. (Brenton’s Septuagint)
-The word Lucifer
there, in Hebrew heylel, was translated
by the70 Hebrew scholars in Greek, as eosphoros/εωσφορος and in Greek the word itself eosphoros/εωσφόρος means
"morning/dawn bearer/bringer"; I emphasize this is the Greek word chosen
by the 70 Jewish scholars that created the Septuagint/LXX; it is highly
likely they translated the Hebrew word heylel correct.
Strongs' tells us:
הֵילֵל
hêylêl
hay-lale'
From H1984 (in the sense of
brightness); the morning star: - lucifer.
Total KJV occurrences: 1
Having made that clear, although in the
verse it doesn’t mention the name/title of Satan/Devil, this “Lucifer… that has
fallen from heaven,” most likely refers to satan in
the Isaiah 14:12 if we compare it to Luke 10:18:
Luk 10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan
as lightning fall from heaven. (KJV)
In that same verse in Isaiah 14:12, we
read:
(Partially my
translation from the Greek Septuagint; I am Greek, but do compare with
Brenton’s above.)
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer(εωσφόρος), that raises in the morning (Greek
Sept. ὁ πρωὶ ἀνατέλλων)! he was stricken down to the
earth/ground, he that is sent to all nations!
-Isaiah is likely
naming someone(Satan) as Lucifer/Venus, to point out how they too were high up
and shined from there, as an angel close to God.
So, based on the Old Testament, that is how
heylel is translated to
ancient Greek, that is, eosphoros, but we have no mention of Jesus called with the
Greek word εωσφόρος (in Latin: Lucifer)
in
the New Testament!!!!!
This actually closes
the issue as to if they are both called “Lucifer/eosphoros.”
But more clarifications will be helpful.
vJesus is actually not even called Light barer (phosphoros/φωσφορος) as some think is
implied in 2 Peter 1:19. We read there (with my more precise translation of
the: a phosphoros) :
And we have the prophetic word made more sure, which
you do well to heed, as a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and
a lightbringer that which bears/brings
light rises in your hearts
(In Greek, the word
is phosphoros/φωσφορος – not eosphoros/εωσφόρος/
Lucifer, not morning star);
--This verse does not
directly say Jesus is that lightbringer/that which
brings light, regardless that it may seem to imply that to us. Jesus is not
literally mentioned here, but even if it He is implied, the word is not dawn bearer/bringer(Lucifer/eosphoros), but light bearer/bringer(phosphoros),
spelled differently in the Greek as we see when comparing the two words!
But let’s continue.
vJesus is metaphorically calls Himself the bright and dawning
star:
Revelations 22:16
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the
churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and dawning
star. (In Greek: ο αστηρ ο λαμπρος και ορθρινος / the star that is bright and of the dawn.)
Two side notes.
-1. Satan is not
called by those exact words in Isaiah, only alluded to the same. We bring to
mind to compare:
Isa.14:12 How has Lucifer, that rose in the morning,
fallen from heaven!.....
-2. The word “morning”
(raised in the…), used in the Septuagint is the word proee/πρωί (the word we still use in Greek today
for morning), but John uses the word orthrinos/ορθρινός, which refers to dawn
to describe the action of that star, the period just before the raising of
the sun, thus referring to Venus.
-3. The words eosphoros and phosphoros, both
can be used to speak of the morning star Venus, BUT, as to who in the Bible is
mentioned as Lucifer(eosphoros), it’s Satan, and not
Jesus.
Conclusions:
*Jesus is not directly
named with the word "dawn bringer" (Lucifer/eosphoros/
εωσφόρος)
*Jesus however is
literally describes Himself (not names Himself) “the bright and dawning
star"(Rev.22:16) which refers to the planet Venus, which is also called
Lucifer(dawn bringer). We will see why He does that.
*Jesus may be implied
as a "light bearer/bringer"(“phosphoros” in
2Peter 1:19), which is a similar word to "dawn bearer/bringer,"(“Lucifer”
in Isa.14:12) but not the same.
*Satan is called Lucifer,
that "raises in the morning" (Isa.14:12), which again implies the
planet Venus raising before the sun.
These last facts however, since Satan and
Jesus from different perspectives relate to Venus, may seem to imply the same
person to some that disregard the teachings(!) related to both, but they at
least need to be informed that the same exact words are NOT used for both.
Still, if we accept that both perspectives (title of Satan and description
of Jesus) were to speak of Venus which gives off a very bright light seen even
during the day, what can the explanation be, how are Satan and Jesus related to
the star Venus? Easy. Lucifer (Venus)
was an honorary title of
Satan to speak of his glory before he
was cast out. The honorary description
however belongs to Jesus Christ! He DESCRIBES Himself as the very known star
THAT HE CREATED (not even naming it), that is, Venus, implying that He is the
coming shining hope of a new eternal day to those that follow Him, that He will
raise in the hearts as they see Him in His second coming (2Peter 1:19).
-Final conclusion: Both the Muslim and the
Christian had it wrong. According to the Bible, Lucifer is not Jesus Christ.
